DESCRIPTION
Chaga known scientifically as Inonutus Obliguus is another strange form of fungus. Growing primarily on birch trees, it mostly grows with in certain northern latitudes. As it’s host is the actual living birth trees, this mushroom has not and may never be a easily cultivated mushroom in a laboratory or mushroom farm. This single factor means that there is a need for responsible harvesting due to public demand increasing. We get our Chaga from a a sustainable Chaga cooperative based out of Alaska.

HISTORY
Chaga has one of the longest known historical uses of any mushroom on the planet. Dating back to 3,400 BC, Otzi the Iceman, a caveman preserved in a sheet of ice was found with Chaga in his pouch. This Chaga is presumed to have been used for fire making. In 2,696 BC, the father of Chinese Medicine Shen Nung, is assumed to be the author of “Shen-nung pen ts'ao ching” (Divine Husband’s Material Medica), One of the earliest known iterations of Chinese Pharmacopeia. Known to have tasted hundred of herbs testing for their medicinal qualities, he named Chaga as “King of the Herbs”.
In the 12th century we find some of the first actual uses of Chaga for medicinal purposes by a few cultures. In Siberia by the Khanty people who would soak Chaga and make decoctions for use as teas to help with digestion and for detoxing purposes, even mixing it with lard and ash to create an anti-inflammatory soap to aid skin issues. Many 1st nation cultures in Canada were also known to make good use of Chaga for the body. Utilizing it for spiritual benefits and even a form of moxibustion was introduced which is a type of heat acupuncture where the herb is heated along meridian points on the body. Though most often used as a tea for infections. The historical use continues through time being incorporated in to therapeutic practices applied for multitudes of different ailments.
